Plumbing Doctor Takes Initiative

We hear a lot about climate change these days, but many of us don't know how to make a difference or even where to begin. Going Green can be intimidating, but you don't have to drop $30k on a hybrid to make a difference. One Davis organization is helping to show people that there are many simple, low cost ways you can make a big impact.

The Cool Davis Initiative is tackling the climate crisis by getting the community involved in going green. The Initiative launched in 2010 and their website explains, "The Cool Davis Initiative is a network of citizens, community organizations, businesses and the City of Davis. Our mission is to inspire our community to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, to adapt to a changing climate and to improve the quality of life for all."

The description may sound vague, but the organization has some hefty and very specific goals. Their primary stated goal is to engage 75% of Davis households in 15% greenhouse gas reductions by 2015! The group is doing this by engaging the community and challenging the citizens of Davis to make positive changes in their lives.

One of the primary ways the group is getting their message out is through their flagship event, the Cool Davis Festival. The third annual Cool Davis Festival took place on Saturday, October 13th at Central Park and featured musical groups, dance performances, theater and kids activities alongside booths teaching people how they can go green.

Plumbing Doctor joined in the initiative this year and became a proud sponsor of the Cool Davis Festival. As a sponsor, we set up a booth at the festival to educate and inform people about green alternatives to plumbing products. Our green products include tankless and solar water heaters, low flow and power flush toilets, recirculation pumps to cut down on wasted water and, our hallmark product, the Water Shield, which is a green alternative to water softeners.

The organization is quick to point out that going green doesn't have to be a sacrifice. Your quality of life can actually improve when you make green decisions and switch to green alternatives. Plumbing Doctor works hard to ensure that all our green products fit in with this principle. We test our products at our office and homes before we offer them for sale, so we know they are high quality and work as well or better than their non-green counterparts.

To see our full line of green products, known as our Emerald Line, and learn about tax incentives visit our Going Green page.

Plumbing Doctor Offers Financing

The economy is beginning to show signs of improvement, but unfortunately, many people are still having trouble getting a loan. To help with this, Plumbing Doctor recently teamed up with a financing company that offers convenient financing to our customers.

Plumbing problems are not fun. No one wants to spend their hard earned money on a plumbing issue. But they are a reality for many homeowners. And letting plumbing problems go can often lead to costlier problems in the future. If you've been putting off a project because of money, we now have a convenient solution for you. We are working with a company called FTL Finance to offer loans on plumbing jobs up to $5000. FLT Finance works specifically with service companies to provide lending to homeowners. We Write a Column

Plumbing Doctor's founder and CEO, Michael Farias, has long had a favorite magazine. It's not Sports Illustrated or Golf Digest. For most people, it's not considered popular or exciting. It's probably not something you've even heard of. But for a certain subset of people, it's the best magazine around. It's the Reeves Journal, the premier plumbing magazine in the western United States.

Mike has been reading the Reeves Journal for nearly two decades to keep up on the plumbing industry and ensure he offers his customers the most current plumbing products and services. So it was a great honor when Mike was asked to write a monthly column in the magazine.

Mike's column, The Doctor is In, offers advice for running a successful plumbing business. As the tagline reads, he offers "simple advice to get your service business healthy". In the column he teaches other plumbers how to use exceptional customer service to create a successful business. It's the same principles that have made Plumbing Doctor so successful with all of you.

Mike's first column will appear in the November issue of the monthly magazine. To learn more about the Reeves Journal visit their website.

Plumbing Doctor Receives
Congressional Commendation

Last month Plumbing Doctor received a Letter of Commendation from Congressman John Garamendi. The letter of Commendation was awarded to recognize us for 20 years of outstanding customer service in Solano and Yolo Counties.

Excellent customer service has always been a cornerstone of our business model, so we were thrilled to be recognized for this achievement. Unlike most plumbing companies, who think they should blow through jobs as quickly as possible, we take our time and get to know our customers so we can build a relationship with you. If you need us to stay a longer to explain the work or answer questions or help out with additional problems, of course we're going to do that. Our goal is to provide you with the best service around so that you'll call us every time you have a plumbing problem.

And our philosophy seems to be working. We have now been in business for 20 years and are one of the premier companies in the region. With your support, we've grown from just the founder and one truck into a company that employs 20 people in the area and serves Solano and Yolo Counties.

Thank you for all your support over the years. We couldn't have won this award without all our great, loyal customers.

Is Davis the Coolest City?

According to an ongoing contest, Davis is one of the Coolest Cities in the State of California. Davis is vying for the title by competing in the Cool California Challenge, which pits 10 cities against each other in an effort to help the cities lower their collective carbon footprint.

In the competition, residents of each city earn points by signing up at www.CoolCaliforniaChallenge.org then tracking their carbon emissions from their utility bill and miles driven. Their carbon usage is compared to similar households in the state and points are awarded for every pound of carbon under the state average. After the first month of tracking their usage, participants earn bonus points every time they reduce their carbon usage.

The ten cities in the challenge, including Davis, Sacramento, San Jose, Santa Cruz and Tracy, were chosen because they already have local programs working to reduce their carbon footprint. The program, which started on April 1, 2012, runs for one year, ending on March 31, 2013.

The contest has two phases. For the first three months, the city that comes in first each month will receive a $10,000 cash prize to put toward their local program. At the end of three months, the contest will narrow to the three monthly winners, who will compete against each other for nine months for the title of Coolest City in California. So far Davis and Sacramento have each won one month and have advanced to the finals. The third city is yet to be announced.

According to the Cool California Challenge website, the program is a collaborative effort between California government, universities, non-profit organizations and program sponsors. Households are allowed to join even if you live in a non-participating city. To learn more or to join the challenge, visit www.CoolCaliforniaChallenge.org.

Plumbing Doctor offers a full line of green products to help you reduce your carbon footprint. You can see the products, known as our Emerald Line, and learn about tax incentives at our website on the Going Green page.

Mark Hardy, Master Technician

Plumbing Doctor has always been proud of the technicians we employ. After 20 years in business, we have assembled a veteran team that has over 100 years of combined plumbing experience, so you know we've seen nearly every plumbing problem you can imagine.

One of our technicians with the most plumbing experience is Mark Hardy. Mark has been with the company for nearly 8 years and has been plumbing for over 25 years. Throughout his career he's seen some crazy things and tackled some unbelievable plumbing jobs. He's also developed advanced plumbing skills that make him an asset to any homeowner who calls on us.

Mark is our in-house expert on tankless water heaters, slab leaks and complete in-home re-pipes. He's also popular with customers because he's personable and takes the time to go over every aspect of the job. If you want him to, he'll spend an hour describing the details of your job to you. He'll even draw pictures if he needs to. And even after all these years, he's still passionate about plumbing because he sees each job as a puzzle that needs to be solved.

Watch how Mark saved a customer 1000 gallons of water.

Click here if you can't see the video.

This is a video of Mark replacing a customer's emergency shut off valve while the water is still running. Because Mark has so much experience, he's able to change the valve while the water is on. Most plumbers would have to drain down the customer's system and shut off the water, a process that takes several hours and wastes about 1000 gallons of water. It's skills like this that only come from experience and ingenuity, and that's why we appreciate Mark and all our Plumbing Doctor technicians.

Voted Best of Yolo County

Every year Davis residents vote on their favorite local businesses in a poll called Best of Yolo County. Residents vote on everything from their favorite pizza joint to the best gym in town. If it's a type of business in Davis, we vote on it. This year, for the first time, they included a plumbing category and Plumbing Doctor was voted the Best Plumbing Company in Yolo County.

The vote is held by the Davis Enterprise every March and voting is done online or by buying a paper. Anyone is allowed to vote for their favorite businesses. The only catch is that you have to vote for at least 25 categories for your ballot to count.

We are honored to be voted Best Plumbing Company in Yolo County. Thank you to everyone who voted for us. We appreciate the support.

We're Growing Again!
Over the past few years it seems you couldn't turn around without seeing a story about how bad the economy is. This has been a tough time in our Country's history and many people have lost a lot - jobs, homes, life savings. But the economy is starting to show signs of improvement. The recovery is slow-going and the reports are mixed, but we appear to be through the worst of it. One small sign on a local level is that Plumbing Doctor is starting to grow again.

Because of our loyal customers, our company was not hit as hard as many. We did not have to lay off any employees or downsize. But we also did not grow through the recession... until now. In 2011 we grew by almost 20%. This much growth would be impressive for any year, but considering the current climate, this growth is outstanding. Thank you to all our customers for supporting this local company through these tough times. We look forward to serving your well into the future and growing to meet your needs.

Residents Fight
Water Rate Increase

Water customers in the city of Davis who are facing major increases in their water bills are fighting back.

In the last issue we reported on a combined water project in Woodland and Davis that would increase water rates in the cities. Woodland is facing a potential doubling of their water rates and Davis is facing a potential tripling of their water rates by 2015.

The rate increases would be used to pay for a $325 million water project that would allow the cities to replace their deteriorating well water supplies with water from the Sacramento River. The project includes an intake facility, raw water pipelines and water storage tanks.

On September 6, 2011, the Davis City Council passed Ordinance No. 2381, which allows the city to increase water rates by up to 14 percent per year over the next five years. However, on October 24 residents in the City of Davis submitted petitions for a referendum against the ordinance.

The city confirms that 5,124 signatures were turned in by the deadline. Opponents only need 3,700 signatures to overturn the decision. The issue will now go the county and then back to the City Council, who may put it to a vote of the people.

The cities pursued this water project because they both believe they will be forced by the state to improve their water quality. The state of California is issuing stricter rules on drinking water and both cities currently get 100% of their drinking water from deteriorating wells that may not qualify for the new standards. Both cities have stated they beleive this plan to be the most cost effective option.

No Thanksgiving dinner is complete without at least one pumpkin pie. Eating pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving is as American as, well, apple pie. On this special holiday you shouldn't buy just any old pumpkin pie from the grocery store. A dessert so integral to this holiday deserves a little effort. That's why Plumbing Doctor would like to share our best pumpkin pie recipe with you. We stuck with something traditional because a good pumpkin pie doesn't need a lot of changes. We hope you'll go the extra mile this Turkey Day and pay homage to the dessert that has become an American tradition. Happy holidays!

We are a Franchisor
The original Plumbing Doctor was founded right in this area almost 20 years ago by local Davis resident and lifelong plumber, Michael Farias. Mike had a vision for a plumbing company that would put customers first and provide an excellent experience unlike anything around. The excellent customer service coupled with the powerful branding of the trucks helped us grow into one of the premier plumbing companies in the area.

As Plumbing Doctor grew, Mike brought in his sons to help him run the company. It has always been important for him that Plumbing Doctor stay connected to the community and be a local, family owned business. This made the choice to expand out of the area difficult. He thought that if we grew, we might lose the personal touch that has made us so successful. That is why we chose to expand through franchising.

Each Plumbing Doctor franchise is owned and operated by a plumbing contractor who lives in their market and personally runs their business. This ensures that the companies are local and connected to their communities and that the focus on customer service is maintained.

Plumbing Doctor is now in several markets, but you can rest assured that each one is a local company that works hard to put you, our customer, first. If you have a plumbing need in the Yuba/Sutter area, Reno, NV or Corvallis, OR look us up. You'll get the same great Plumbing Doctor experience you're used to from a company that's local to that area.

Water Customers Face Rate Increases

Water customers in the cities of Davis and Woodland are facing major changes to their water source and these changes may lead to increases in their water bills.

Both Davis and Woodland currently get 100% of their drinking water from groundwater in the two cities. This water supply has been sufficient for both areas since the well systems were built in the 1950s, but the quality of the wells and the water has been declining over time, so the cities had to explore additional water sources.

In September 2009 the two cities teamed up and formed the Woodland-Davis Clean Water Agency (WDCWA) to begin exploring options for additional clean, safe water.

After much research and debate, the group concluded that the best option to solve the water dilemma is to develop a new, higher-quality water supply.

In March 2011 the group secured rights to surface water from the Sacramento River. The cities can divert up to 45,000 acre-feet of water per year from the river. However, during summer and other dry times, access will be restricted, so the cities will purchase water from agricultural suppliers. Both cities will continue to use local ground water to supplement the water supply.

Cost to Residents

The project, which will include a water intake facility on the Sacramento River, a regional water treatment facility and new pipelines for water conveyance, is estimated to cost $325 million. The cities are aggressively seeking options to decrease this cost, including state and federal funding and sharing facilities with other jurisdictions. Even so, residents of the cities face rate increases.

The City of Davis is proposing to establish maximum annual increases for the City's water and sanitary sewer service rates over the next five years. If adopted, the proposed water and sanitary sewer rates will increase by 3% per year and the first rate increase will go into effect December 1, 2011.

The city will hold a Public Hearing on September 6, 2011, at 6:30 p.m., in the City of Davis Community Chambers, 23 Russell Blvd., Davis, CA. Click here to learn more about the Davis rate increases.

The City of Woodland has not yet proposed rate increases for the project, but they are exploring their options.

Get to know...
Our Field Supervisor

In each issue we share something about the company or an employee so you get to know us better.

In this issue we're featuring Our Field Supervisor,
Dave.

In this day and age the average American worker holds the same job for only three to five years. This rapid turnover contributes to employers and employees investing less energy and training into each job position. At Plumbing Doctor we're working to buck this trend. We have several employees who have been with us for more than 5 years and even a few who have been here more than 10. For a small company that is only 15 years old, we think this is exceptional.

One of our first and longest standing employees is Dave Credit. Dave is now a supervisor and a crucial part of the operation, but, like most plumbers, he started at the bottom and worked his way up. Mr. Credit started with the company as a manual laborer with little experience in plumbing. He immediately showed technical abilities and a desire to learn, so an apprenticeship position was created for him. Over several years he mastered the varied skills required to be a full service plumber and today he is a master plumber with the ability and know-how to solve even the most difficult plumbing problems. Since Dave, we have trained two other employees in the apprenticeship program. Dave has shown us that if you invest in your employees, they will invest in you.

New Regulations Cut the Flow of Plumbing Products

Two new regulations recently went into effect that impact the plumbing products we can offer our customers.

The Yolo and Solano Air Quality Management Board passed a regulation requiring all newly installed residential water heaters in Yolo and Solano Counties to be super low nox, which means they have lower nitrogen oxide and Particulate Matter emissions. All Plumbing Doctor water heaters are compliant with the regulation, but we have found companies that are not yet aware of the change and are not yet using compliant water heaters. Non-compliance can result in fines as high as $25,000 and homeowners may be fined even if they have the units professionally installed.

California also passed a statewide bill that went into effect last year that requires all plumbing fixtures and pipes that come into contact with water intended for human consumption to be certified "lead free", which is a standard that means they have very little lead, not no lead at all. California is one of only two states to pass such an ordinance.

While both rules move us toward a cleaner, safer environment, they do have drawbacks for our customers. Water heaters that comply with the new regulations are more expensive than non-compliant water heaters by a few hundred dollars. As for the lead free fixtures, they are generally more expensive than non-compliant models and because only two states have these regulations, it can be difficult to find compliant fixtures, which means the choice of styles may be limited. Fortunately one of our suppliers recently released a full line of high-quality, compliant faucets.

As more jurisdictions adopt these regulations we believe the prices will go down and availability will go up. For now, though, we can take consolation in the fact that we live in an area that is investing in and supporting a greener planet.

New Year Brings New Incentives

The close of 2010 saw the end of many energy saving incentives, but if you know where to look, there is still money for going green.

Click on each of the products to learn about the incentives:

            Solar water heaters

            Tankless water heaters

            Gas Tank type water heaters
(electric does not qualify at this time)

These products not only offer you money in the form of incentives, but they will also save you money in the future by reducing your energy costs.

Plumbing Doctor Serves In-N-Out

Plumbing Doctor was built on a simple principle: provide the highest quality plumbing work with excellent customer service.

It can be difficult to find companies that observe these principles. Fortunately there are some exceptions, and one big one is California's own In-N-Out Burger. In-N-Out was founded over 50 years ago in Southern California using principles similar to ours.

These shared values are why Plumbing Doctor is proud to announce that we are now serving the plumbing needs of the In-N-Out restaurants in our markets and the surrounding areas. We believe our high quality service will blend well with California's beloved burger chain.

Get to know...
Our Franchisees

In each issue we share something about the company or an employee so you get to know us better.

In this issue we're featuring Our Franchisees

Plumbing Doctor CEO, Michael Farias, in the center, with Yuba City Franchisees John Farrar and Ted Holmes.

Plumbing Doctor was founded in Yolo County over 15 years ago by life long California resident Michael Farias. As we've grown into one of the largest plumbing companies in the area, we've continually worked to build strong relationships with our customers and maintain ties to the community.

With the success of Plumbing Doctor, we wanted to spread our brand and company culture to other small and mid-sized markets in the region, but we wanted each store to be owned and operated by a local resident who had a connection with their community as well. So in 2006 we decided to grow Plumbing Doctor through franchising.

Franchising allows us to spread the brand and systems to other markets, but keeps the local feel and excellent customer service that has helped make Plumbing Doctor so successful.

In addition to the company owned offices in Yolo and Solano Counties, we currently have two franchises: one in Reno and one in Yuba City. We hand pick each franchisee and provide extensive one-on-one training to ensure that each location maintains high standards of service and workmanship.

We are currently focusing our expansion on Northern California and Oregon.

Dixon Bans Water Softeners

On October 11, 2010 the Dixon City Council passed an ordinance that bans all residential water softeners in the city. The ordinance makes it illegal for residents to use water softeners that release brine into the city’s sewer lines. Residents have 600 days to remove water softeners and will face fines after the 600 day grace period.

Dixon is one of only three cities in California to ban water softeners outright, but it may soon be joined by other cities, including Davis, who have been exploring similar ordinances.

The City passed the ordinance because they are facing fines from the state of California for releasing too much sodium into the state water system. The City of Dixon has already received over $240,000 in fines from the state and they risk receiving more fines if they do not lower the level of sodium in their waste water.

In order to offset the cost of removing softeners and purchasing alternatives, the City of Dixon is offering a buy back program to all residents who currently have functioning water softeners. The buy back program will go into effect on November 11th and will run for 600 days. The buy back amount starts at $1200 and will be reduced by half every 200 days. After 600 days residents will not receive any buy back funds and will be subject to fines.

Plumbing Doctor Granted Exclusive Rights To Green Alternative
to Water Softeners

This October Plumbing Doctor was granted the exclusive rights to distribute HydroCare scale prevention units. The units are an environmentally friendly alternative to water softners. Because our area has hard water, many people consider water softeners a necessity to protect pipes, fixtures and appliances from scale build up. But water softeners have negative environmental impacts. The average residential water softener wastes 40-70 gallons of water a month and water softeners release salt into the water table, which can damage crops and water ways.

Because of these environmental problems, Plumbing Doctor has been looking for a green alternative to softeners and came across HydroCare. HydroCare uses patented technology to prevent scale from bonding to surfaces like your pipes, water heater and dishes. It does not use any salt or chemicals and does not waste water or regenerate, so it has none of the negative environmental impacts associated with a water softener.

HydroCare has been widespread in the U.K., Europe and the Middle East for over 20 years and is just making its way to the United States. HydroCare only allows one plumbing company to distribute the units in each market in order to maintain high levels of customer service. Plumbing Doctor was granted the rights to distribute in Yolo County, Solano County, Yuba County, Sutter County and Reno.

Contact Plumbing Doctor today for a free consultation to find out if HydroCare is right for you.

Jorge started with the company almost two years ago looking for opportunity. From the start Jorge showed drive, technical abilities and great customer service skills, so we began training him to be a fully qualified plumbing technician.

The process is time consuming because there is so much to learn, but Jorge has exceeded our expectations at every stage. Training from within the company is costly, but it ensures that our technicians know how to do things correctly and up to our standards of service.

Jorge rode with a supervisor for almost a year to refine his skills. He started operating his own service truck in June and has had great success. We look forward watching him grow and develop into a star technician.

Jorge is a resident of Dixon, CA and proud father of one.

New Solar Water Heater Rebate Announced

California just announced a new solar rebate, making solar water heaters more affordable than ever. There are now two incentives available to home owners that combine for almost $4000 in savings.

Since 2008 there has been a national tax credit available for 30% off the total cost of a unit and installation. And starting in 2010 the State of California is offering a rebate program for solar water heaters called the California Solar Initiative. The program entitles residential customers to up to $1800 in rebates.

In addition to the thousands you'll save in rebates, you'll also lower your gas or electric bill by up to 80%. To learn more about our solar water heaters or either of the tax incentives visit the solar water heaters page on our website.

Contact us today to schedule a free in-home consultation to learn whether a solar water heater is right for you.

Helping Habitat for Humanity

Most of us wouldn't be too thrilled if our boss asked us to come into work on a Saturday. But last May, several employees of Plumbing Doctor gladly showed up to run the waste lines for two Habitat for Humanity homes being built in Woodland. This is the second project we've done with Habitat for Humity. These projects are a great way for our employees to use their specialized skills to make a difference in the community.

The homes are being built for two local families. The families are required to put in at least 500 hours of work and will purchase the properties for a greatly reduced price with a no interest loan provided by Habitat for Humanity. The homes are scheduled to be completed this fall.

If you are interested in volunteering with Habitat for Humanity or learning more about this project, you can visit their website.

Get to know...
The Trucks

In each issue we share something about the company or an employee so you get to know us better.

In this issue we're featuring the trucks.

Our founder, Michael Farias, began using a recycled ambulance as a service truck in 1984 as a way to convey to customers that he provides fast, efficient service. Customers loved the trucks, so the idea stuck. Even as our fleet grows, the trucks are all still recycled ambulances and our service is still fast and efficient.

The large back allows us to carry all the plumbing tools and equipment we need to complete most jobs. This is great for you because it means we don’t have to leave a job to go searching for parts, which saves you time and money.

The trucks are also great because they are memorable, so you can easily call us back if you liked your service. You don’t have to struggle to remember which company you had out, just think of the trucks.

Like our name, the design of the trucks is protected by a federal trademark. We’re the only company in the nation licensed to use the design, so when you see our trucks, you know it’s the real plumbing doctor. Next time we're at your house, feel free to ask your technician for a peak inside the trucks.
